Yesterday, I wasn’t in the mood to work on baseboards or door casings, so I decided to do a fun project. I was determined to figure out arrangements for a large, blank wall in the studio. Spoiler alert: I didn’t figure it out and I didn’t finish it. But I’ve made some progress, maybe it’s easier for me to decide exactly what I want to do. Let me explain.
A few months ago, I bought This huge, colorful, erasable wall calendar From Kaleidoscope Living. And when I say it’s huge, I mean it’s huge. Each month is 16β³ x 20β³, so if you hung all 12 at once, the entire calendar would take up a very large area of ββthe wall. Yes, I want to hang all 12 months at once. I love the effect of seeing all 12 together.
The calendar is printed on very thick paper, but I wanted mine to be sturdier than that. So I bought 12 pieces of white foam core board at Michael’s, along with some photo mount spray adhesive and I got busy.
This is the spray I used.
I sprayed two coats of adhesive on the foam core board, let it dry for a few minutes, and then carefully pressed the calendar to the foam core board.
You can see how much thickness is added to the foam core board, but it’s Styrofoam, so cutting is pretty easy.
Using a metal straight edge and a brand new razor blade on my utility knife, I began cutting away the excess foam core board.
I went through three razor blades to make a total of 12 months because I wanted these super clean cuts. I didn’t want to take a chance on the blade becoming dull and the foam core board tearing. But as long as the blade is new and sharp, the cuts will be clean and easy.
After I mounted and trimmed all 12, I added four 3M foam sticky squares to the back of each month.
And that’s as far as I got. I thought I had a plan, but I realized I didn’t like my plan at all. My original plan had a 55-inch TV centered on the wall between the front of the mural wall cabinets and the door casing on the right (not yet installed). I haven’t bought a TV yet, but it looks like a 55-inch TV on that wall.
With the TV in the middle, I planned to divide the calendar into two sections of six months each on either side of the TV. But the more I thought about it and pictured it in my mind, the more I wasn’t sold on the plan.
And then I wondered if I even needed a TV in this room. When I was planning the room (before the drywall went up, which was many years ago), I planned for the TV on this wall, so there was an outlet in the middle. But I don’t watch much TV now. I listen to podcasts and YouTube videos throughout the day while I work. So now I’m second-guessing my plan to put a TV in here.
So since I don’t watch TV at all during the day and I don’t need it here, I can’t figure out how to work it into the wall design. I’ll probably forget about TV altogether. But that leaves me with an outlet to work with. The location of that outlet makes it very difficult to center the calendar on the wall.
So now I’m looking at something like this arrangement, with a calendar offset on the right and some shelves on the left to balance things out. (Note: I don’t have two calendars. The “hanging” one on the wall is a copy and paste from the Kaleidoscope Living product listing, hence the two random plants below. π The ones lined up above them are the real floor sitting in my studio right now.)
Of the options I considered for this wall, this is by far my favorite. But as always, I’m open to ideas. If not shelves, then what? I also decided not to use my spoonflower color chart. At least, I decided. It looks like a square/rectangle bordered on overload with a calendar, a paint swatch cabinet to the right of the door, and then a color swatch chart. So I need some more ideas.
