Irish soda bread recipe
Have you ever had Irish soda bread? I first tried it a few years ago and have been a fan ever since. It is very easy to make and tastes amazing. You start by mixing all the dry ingredients and cutting in a few tablespoons of butter. Then stir in the buttermilk until a dough forms. From there, you dump it onto a lightly floured surface, form it into a round loaf, (no need to knead!) bake it in a cast iron skillet, brush it with melted butter, and that’s it. see? Super easy.
It totally reminds me of biscuits in bread form! And even though soda bread has less butter than biscuits, it still has a great buttery flavor. Plus, it has a wonderful texture—the crust is crisp and the center is soft and tender. Serve it plain, cooked with butter or jam. Give it a try, I know you’ll love it!
4 ingredients to make it
I don’t know about you… but Irish Soda Bread only requires 4 simple ingredients And It doesn’t require any kneading or proofing which makes this recipe a winner. Here’s everything you need:
- All Purpose Flour: Soda provides the bread’s base, structure and body.
- Baking Soda: No soda bread without baking soda! It is a leavening agent that reacts with the buttermilk to form bubbles that rise to the top of the bread.
- Salt: Enhances the taste of bread.
- buttermilk, Adds a bit of tang and moisture and also helps activate the baking soda.
- Softened Butter (for serving): The perfect addition to this delicious soda bread!
- Jam (for serving): For some sweet taste. Try this homemade strawberry jam recipe if you’re up for a challenge!
How to Make Irish Soda Bread
When it comes to homemade bread, this recipe is very simple. Even without yeast, proofing, and kneading, Irish soda bread is perfect—it’s crisp on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside.
- Preheated oven: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare the dough: Mix flour, baking soda and salt. Then create a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and pour the buttermilk in the middle.
- shape: Mix the dough with your hands or using a wooden spoon. Put the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead it until it forms a ball.
- baked: Place the bread on a parchment-lined baking sheet. With a knife, score the top of the loaf in an x. Place in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Remove the loaf of soda bread from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with butter and jam or alongside my Guinness Beef Stew.
Tips and Variations
- Buttermilk substitute: If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 2 cups of milk, preferably whole milk, with 2 tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice, mix the liquids and let the milk thicken before using it.
- Don’t overwork: Don’t work this soda bread dough at all, you just have to mix it until it comes together and forms a round that holds together on its own. If you overwork the dough it will be tough in texture.
- Add raisins: Some people like to add raisins to their Irish soda bread. If this is your preference, be careful not to overwork the flour after you’ve added ¾ cup of the raisin liquid to the dry ingredients.
Storing leftovers
After the bread has cooled, store at room temperature in a bag or airtight container for up to 4 days.
Can I freeze soda bread?
Yes you can! Wrap the cooled baked bread tightly in plastic wrap or foil for freezer storage for up to a month. Thaw on the counter and reheat on low heat in the oven to refresh.
You can also freeze unbaked soda bread dough after shaping it. Wrap it tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to bake, thaw the batter in the refrigerator overnight, then pop it straight into the oven.
