Our Italy Adventure: Sorrento – Southern Hospitality

[ad_1]

Our Italy adventure continues this week and our next stop is Sorrento. Sorrento is south of Naples and is on the water as well with beautiful scenery and charming streets. We stayed in Sorrento for 3 nights and packed as much as we could into that time frame. We really enjoyed the area and my only regret is that we didn’t have more time on the Amalfi Coast. I think I could have stayed here for a week and liked it. It might be a good reason to go back someday! The Amalfi Coast is breathtakingly beautiful! If you missed the Naples Italy post, be sure and start there first.

Hotel Michelangelo: Sorrento

Our tour company Go Ahead Tours (affiliate link), our group stayed at the Michelangelo Hotel and it was nice and quaint with walking access to the downtown area, shops and restaurants. We also enjoyed our breakfasts here, lots to choose from including pastries, fruit, eggs, bacon and plenty of meat and cheeses. We had a lovely little balcony with a view of the water in the distance.

Sorrento Walking Tour

Our tour director, Carmen, took anyone who wanted to go on a little walking tour of Sorrento after we checked in, and we enjoyed strolling the quaint streets, popping in the shops, and generally checking out Sorrento.

It’s a pretty walkable town.

Limoncello is everywhere in Sorrento, so if you haven’t heard of it, it’s an Italian liqueur. It’s pretty strong on its own, but they sip a little after a meal. I like it as a very tasty and refreshing limoncello spritz. We didn’t have a lot of extra room to bring anything home, but I liked it and may have to see the house. Citrus trees are everywhere here, so you’ll see lemons and other citrus growing in the streets, which is pretty cool to see.

Fresh fruits here are also unreal. From my visit 30 years ago, I remember their fruit stands as works of art.

Doesn’t that look amazing? All kinds of lemons are great too.

We walked to the water view and it was really beautiful.

We had lunch here while at a restaurant called Sole & Fish & and enjoyed these views from below.

Mt. Vesuvius in the background.

I love the buildings in Italy. That scarf in the air was Carmen’s wand, the one she used to make sure we were all with her. She is the mother duck of all ducklings.

There was so much beauty and atmosphere to take in while in Italy and I loved it all.

There are the citrus trees I mentioned.

I wonder if people take from these trees, the natives who live here.

Night view. We felt very safe driving in the Sorrento, it was beautiful at night.

After dinner, as always!

Lunch at La Limonia

The only disappointment was on our second day of touring in Sorrento. We went to the island of Capri that first day and the next day we got to enjoy a boat trip along the Amalfi coast, stopping in the town of Amalfi. The best views we heard were from the water overlooking the beautiful colorful houses on the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. As the weather did not cooperate, the boats did not run that day, luckily. The tour company always has a backup plan, but we didn’t get to see the area, which was disappointing, but unfortunately these things happen and you can’t control the weather.

Carmen booked meals for all of us La Limonia, a lemon grove and restaurant local to Sorrento, just two blocks from our hotel. They also did a walking tour that day, but we chose to rest and have lunch at the hotel. It rained quite a bit, so we didn’t get out much in the afternoon.

The meal was enjoyable with roasted vegetables, pasta and a delicious lemon cake for dessert.

They had these huge lemons and cut one open so we could see the inside, mostly pulp with a little lemon in the middle. We heard that they use lemon peel to make limoncello.

Delicious pasta with lemon cream sauce.

And a delicious lemon cake for dessert. It is a really beautiful place with lemon trees everywhere.

Dinner at Fish & Sole

During our nights in Sorrento, we went to dinner with new friends from the tour, Cindy and Dave. Soul & Fish And that’s great. Located right on the water we had a nice sunset view. Dave was checking the fresh fish one of them had ordered.

On our nights in Sorrento, we went out to dinner with Cindy and Dave Soul & Fish And that’s great. Located right on the water we had a nice sunset view. My meal was delicious and I enjoyed it very much. I put that fish in the left center, very tasty. It’s more upscale Italian, but very good.

We enjoyed our time in Sorrento, but we only scratched the surface of the things to do in this quaint Italian hill-side town.

We saw some beautiful scenery on our way to our final dinner in Sorrento at a rustic farmhouse restaurant. We climbed the mountain to get to the restaurant and it was a fun ride.

Rustic Farmhouse Dinner: Fattoria Terranova

One of the optional excursions offered on this tour (at extra cost per person) is this wonderful rustic farmhouse restaurant, Fatoria Terranova, maybe 15 of us went and it was very enjoyable and fun. Wine tasting and very tasty food, but the atmosphere is like something out of a movie. So wow! It is coming to the patio space.

Our table was inside as it was raining outside, but beautifully set.

Again the patio area. Isn’t it gorgeous?

The restaurant manager was very enthusiastic about sharing the wines they had and we enjoyed prosecco, white and red wines as well as all the goodness you see above. Tiramisu for lunch! It’s heavenly! Look at those tomatoes hanging from the ceiling. He told us that they picked those homegrown tomatoes in August and hung them to use throughout the winter. I don’t know how they make it, but they do. Tomatoes are a big crop in Italy and they are so beautiful!

This was definitely my favorite extra vacation meal we had, it was amazing and delicious and just what I could imagine a rustic farmhouse in Italy to be. I loved it so much! What an experience it all was. Our table felt luxurious and well looked after by the restaurant. Mark was the only one at dinner that night, so he got extra attention from the manager.

What fun Sorrento had for us! I will do another post as I took a lot of pictures on the island of Capri. It is beautiful and just as you would imagine an island in Italy to be. I will share that next week and take my time to share our entire trip with you.

Also stay tuned next week, I’m starting my own trip next year and I hope some of you will join us to Italy! Look out for next Thursday as the tour kicks off. I will tell you all those details then! Ciao Bellas!
