Decisions, Progress & Uncertainty – Addict 2 Decoration®

Some of you will be very pleased to know that I finally started painting the rest of the ceiling in the studio last night and hope to finish the ceiling and the rest of the walls today.

It’s a huge room with a high ceiling, so it’s something I’ve been putting off for a while. Not only was I not thrilled with the idea of painting such a high ceiling and spending so much time on scaffolding, but I was also put off by the fact that to paint the rest of the ceiling, I would have to work around it. Some pretty big stuff. My work tables are too big to move them out of the room. And I have nowhere else to put the desk. So I have to work around those things as well as many other things as I go.

I spent some time yesterday cleaning and putting things away to make things easier, but there are still a few things I need to work on. But it will be very happy to finally finish this work! I’m ready to get rid of the blue and have a white ceiling and Benjamin Moore classic gray walls. I only have small parts on two walls to finish, and then I have this one big wall that I need to paint.

I would be so excited if I could finish the whole painting today!

In other news, I’m so glad you mentioned the wall vent I had to put in the wall to provide air circulation to the HVAC unit in the storage room! At this point, I plan on keeping the air vent here, on the wall next to my desk and perpendicular to my pink cabinets.

But when I mention it, many people have other suggestions. One suggestion is to replace the door with a louvered door to the storage closet. I don’t think my brain would allow me to have a solid door at the back entry (ie, the door to the studio bathroom) and a louvered door. Having doors that don’t match like that would probably drive me crazy.

I originally considered cutting out the two bottom panels on the door and adding a large vent in that area, but since the door is a pocket door, my concern was that anything I added to the door would add too much thickness to the door. It works smoothly and properly in the pocket.

But many of you suggested putting a hole in the wall at the back entry. I liked the idea, but there was only one place for it to go – to the right of the closet door. Again, since the door is a pocket door that opens on the left side, I can’t cut the rectangle of drywall on the left side of the door. So the only option is to place a vent in the back wall of this narrow area.

That area was 17.25 inches wide and I cut enough of the drywall on the side of the room to make sure there was nothing on the underside of the wall. And luckily, there’s nothing there! No studs, no wires, nothing. So this is the perfect place for a vent as long as I can find a vent the size I really like.

I still have quite a few DIY projects I need to finish for the studio, so the last thing I wanted was to add a DIY vent to my list. So instead, I went looking for pretty air return vents and I came across it Worth Home’s primed wood luxury air return vents (affiliate link), and they are the perfect size for the space! I bought one with a rough opening of 14″ x 30″ and overall dimensions of 16,8″ x 31.5″, but they have every size imaginable. I mean, I have 17.25 inches of space so it almost fits!

I’m really excited about getting it done and I think it will look great (or disappear completely) once it’s installed and painted the wall color. And I can finally close the closet door! And the best thing is that I ordered it on Saturday night and it’s out for delivery right now. I love DIYing, but there’s nothing like the quick gratification of fast deliveries.

Finally, I haven’t decided on the cabinets yet. I know the majority of people who voted (I would guess 95% of the over 450 votes) said I should paint the area around the window and the wall behind the cubbies.

I totally understand why this is such a popular choice. I understand. And as I said last week, it was the clear winner of the three options when my mom, my brother, and I weighed the options.

But for some reason, when it came down to actually painting those areas, I just couldn’t do it. There’s something about the color of the wall in the back of the cubbys that I can’t get on board with. To me, the color of the wall showing there detracts from the appearance of the cubbies. And no, removing the bridge is not an option. As much as I love the bridge, I must note this one painful detail.

Tried putting the wallpaper on the back to see what the wallpaper would look like…

I like the look, but as my mom pointed out, as soon as I put things in those cubbies it gets covered. So I don’t know what to do. I will find it, but I haven’t figured it out yet. All I know is that I’m sure those cubes need some lighting. And once they have the lighting, I realize they need it all the time.
