A great use for my new favorite fabric

Yesterday morning, I decided I was going to use my new favorite fabric on my desk chair in the studio. This is the fabric I’m talking about — this amazing velvet strip from Covi Fabrics.

But I had lunch with my mother yesterday. 😀 Our lunches are four hours long, so we have plenty of time to talk about a lot of things. If I’m in the middle of a design decision, it always comes up at some point. As I was sharing my idea of using that fabric on a desk chair, I thought to myself (and shared out loud) that using such a wonderful fabric on a chair in my studio would be a mistake. After all, I hope to eventually decorate three new rooms (family room, laundry room, and master bedroom), and that fabric would seem more appropriate to use in a prominent spot in one of those rooms.

At first, I thought about using it on an ottoman or a chair in the family room. Then if I go with the plan of turning our front room into a dining room (after the addition is built) I thought the fabric would be beautiful on the dining chairs. I can make two captain’s chairs in that fabric, with a coordinating fabric on the others. Or I could use it in the breakfast room (when I turn that room back into a breakfast room). The possibilities are endless.

And then last night, as I stood at our bathroom vanity, smeared castor oil on my face, and got ready for bed, I admired the beautiful mural behind the bathtub in the mirror. That bathroom was finished about 18 months ago, and I still love looking at that mural.

Then I understood. Those colors! Look at those colors! They are the perfect complement to the colors in that beautiful fabric!

It’s not a perfect match, but it doesn’t need to be. I don’t plan on using it in the bathroom. But what about our future bedroom?! Isn’t this a wonderful fabric to use as a jumping off point for our future bedroom?

I couldn’t get the thought out of my head, so I got up early this morning and started dreaming about the possibilities. And then I started doing a little mock up to see what I could come up with quickly. My thoughts immediately suggested using the fabric on the upholstered headboard and perhaps even the entire upholstered bed. And I dream of having a bedroom with teal walls (because, well, I do). So with those two details, I started filling in the details and after about 45 minutes, I had this…

I borrowed some cream linen draperies from Pottery Barn, some natural wood bedside tables from Home Depot, some lamps from Lamps Plus, an olive tree from Amazon, a rug from Ruggable, and a camelback upholstered bed from The Inside. This is the first time I’ve thought about what our bedroom will look like and the first time I’ve put any ideas together. So this might be a very rough draft first, and what I end up with when we finally have a bedroom might be different. But I’m 99.9% sure, that amazing fabric should be used in a prominent place in our future bedroom.

So I’m going to save this fabric for a more prominent and special place in the future. But I also don’t go with a green chair in the studio. I wasn’t thrilled with any green fabrics, and quite honestly, once I saw the greens, I realized I wasn’t really excited about the idea of a green desk chair. But my mom and I came up with a great alternative. I’m going to go ahead and order new fabric and I’ll share those details once I get started on that project.
