Two Choices for Desk Chair Fabric (One Leads to Another Change)

[ad_1]

The other day, I showed you the fabric samples I ordered for my desk chair in the studio. Most of them came yesterday. I started with about 10 and quickly whittled them down to five. The rest are too dull, too dark, too bright.

So after that quick elimination round, I was left with these five fabrics…

As you can see, I’m really into green, so most of them are green. The ones I eliminated were also raw. But there was one oddball among the greens – a wonderful velvet striped fabric that I had to see in person.

Well, it was as wonderful in person as I expected. But that makes my decision even tougher. I was almost certain the chair would be green, but now there’s this new possibility that takes it in a completely different direction.

Here’s a really close up view of the fabric. I mean, doesn’t it feel customary to go with my cabinets?! I’ve chosen a kind of whimsical pink for my cabinets, so this fabric looks great with a slightly “off” pink cabinet color and seems to be the pick for me.

But if I choose that, my color scheme for my pendant light will have to change. The bottom row in this photo has no way of sitting under a gradient rainbow pendant light made from 1200 spoons painted in this color gradient.

Those two things are not close to each other.

So if I go with that fabric, I’ll change my plan for light and use one color in an ombre style, starting with a dark teal at the top and gradually getting lighter in color toward the lower rings. I would probably choose a color like Thai Teal, which is one of the paint color swatches in my paint swatch cabinet.

I think they would look great next to/above a white desk.

The idea of making a teal ombre pendant light out of tiny tasting spoon bowls makes me smile because the rainbow gradient pendant light is going to be inspired by my favorite piece of art I’ve ever made…

…the teal ombre pendant light harkens back to one of my oldest and most popular DIY projects. I mean, it goes back to our condo days and it was the viral project that put my blog on the internet map. This is my original chrysanthemum mirror made from plastic spoons.

So I’m leaning towards that, but I’m not 100% sure right now. My mom still loves the idea of the green chair and the original rainbow gradient pendant light. I know green makes more sense in a living room. I really do. After all, look at this green already in the room…

So yes, green makes total sense. But…but…the wallpaper mural and the floral fabric also have teal, and I don’t have any other teal in my room right now. And since teal is my absolute favorite color, doesn’t that mean that teal needs to be featured more prominently in my studio other than as a wall mural and a random flower in the fabric?

Ok, moving on. If I go with green, unfortunately, I don’t think my favorite green fabric would work. It’s a very thin fabric, and it’s not velvet, and I don’t think it would hold up against my cat Felicity. So, unfortunately, I have to rule it out.

I also exclude this green and white stripe. I love stripes, but this particular one just doesn’t do anything for me. I love it over very large pieces of furniture like a large upholstered ottoman or sofa. But it feels wrong for a desk chair.

So it comes down to two green velvets. Do you remember that green velvet that was $159 a yard, and I couldn’t figure out why it was so expensive? Well, now I know. Here it is. I don’t know if you can see how expensive this velvet is, but I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s a lot of thought and expensive, it feels like you can use it to dry off after a shower. 😀 But no. That would be a very expensive towel.

And then here’s the more reasonably priced Apple Green Velvet I think is my favorite.

So let me show you a close up view of the difference between these two velvets. Here’s the apple green velvet, which is pretty close to what I’m used to, but it’s a little thinner than I was hoping for.

But it’s still very good velvet at $25.99 a yard.

Now look at this plush velvet. You can see how expensive this fabric is…

And take a look at this sign. It’s like a carpet! 😀 Never seen velvet like this in my life! It’s polyester, which is my second favorite velvet, second only to silk. (I Nope Like cotton velvet.) I mean, I can’t stop touching this stuff. Now I totally understand why $159 a yard.

So if I go with green, I’m still undecided on which green velvet to choose. Maybe one of these or I’ll order more samples. The apple green is a bit thin and the other is more than I expected to spend on fabric.

But what I can’t decide now is whether I should go with the stripe I like and change my plan for a pendant light (it’s not too late to do that), or should I stick with the green chair . And the original plan for the pendant light.

Striped velvet fabric with a teal ombre pendant light reminiscent of my original chrysanthemum mirror?

Or a sturdy green chair with a rainbow gradient pendant light inspired by my rainbow pinwheel art?
